This was the cover art for the “50 Years of Pride” issue of The New York Times special section. Half a century ago, police and patrons clashed during a raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. That riot poured out onto Christopher Street, where the pride colors are now painted, intersecting with the street crosswalk lines. That clash helped spark a movement that continues to this day. Designed to commemorate that historic moment, the cover draws inspiration from the pride colors painted on the Christopher Street crosswalk, turning them into a 50.

The online magazine tsri.ch decided to publish a print edition for its fifth anniversary. It contains the best articles from five years of tsüri.ch collected in five reports, five interviews, and five lists. Our design revolves around this anniversary, and we set the scene in a five-column grid.

To open this twelve-page photography essay and story about Lady Gaga’s acclaimed transition from musician to award-winning actor, we looked to create typography that would evoke a bohemian spirit. The photographs that follow demonstrate a contortionist athleticism mirrored in these modified letterforms.

These days, academic journals have grown to bulky proportions. But does this have to mean heavyweight design? Well, yes, it does, because the layout informs the hasty viewer about the serious, challenging nature of the articles. Design here isn’t about glossing over or dumbing down—it’s about added attraction. The form is worthy of the content.

This is how Harlee Case, co-founder of Ladies of Paradise—a collective at the forefront of the female-centric weed scene in Portland—packs. Like Harlee herself, the typography and design are fun, carefree, and vibrant (under the influence).

Here followed Mexican-born chef Daniela Soto-Innes through a typical morning at her two New York City-based restaurants, Cosme and Atla. In a high-stress industry that famously perpetuates cycles of abuse, Soto-Innes pours into her people, prioritizing their experience, growth, and dynamic over her own celebrity. In short, her team is like family. The design captures this ethos and Soto-Innes’ strength, balancing moments of airiness with bold, built type.

The design of this profile of musician Maggie Rogers echoes the central themes of the story, using gradients to talk about light and letterforms to talk about power.

ALBERT, the new magazine released by Einstein Foundation Berlin, has the following raison d’être: “Not only do we want to support cutting-edge scientific research, we also want to talk about it.” M23 was commissioned to take over the design of the magazine’s fourth issue, the topic of which was new beginnings. Future editions will highlight other scientific fields of study and the ways they are being pursued in the Einstein Foundation Berlin headquarters.

For our annual list of the 100 most creative people in business, we wanted to create an opener that spoke to the diversity of backgrounds, industries, and visions that constituted our 2019 list. Artur Tenczyński’s work has a layered, geometric feel that, in combination with the varying patterns, touched on the assortment of creativity in the package. We placed the all-red type on a tinted background to give the spread a monochromatic look that felt timely and sophisticated.

This zine is part of Flint is a Place, a cross-platform documentary series about Flint, Michigan, by artist Zackary Canepari and his team. The project seeks to document a specific moment within this American city as it’s both perceived and experienced. This publication honors the last prom at Northwestern High School, the only high school left in the city. A series of portraits and quotes celebrate the pride, youth, and style of the Northwestern students. Although it has a linear narrative of prom night, if taken apart the zine is a series of eight posters. In addition, we designed a bespoke typeface to reflect the flair of that special night.
