Univers : expérimental

This is part of a series of posters inspired by the experiences during a short art residency in Onomichi, Japan. Setouchi Shimanami Kaido is a bicycle route that connects Onomichi on Japan’s main island, Honshu, with Imabari on the island of Shikoku. The two islands are united by six small islands connected by six large bridges. In the same way that the islands are joined, the words “Setouchi Shimanami Kaido” are united, generating a single route.

This was a personal project based on research about indigenous Brazilian tribes. I created this embroidered alphabet after being inspired by their body paintings, basketry, and crafts, which have a strong geometric theme made from lines creating intricate patterns. I used a rustic fabric as a reminder of their art of basketry and the colors red and black to represent their mostly used natural pigments. The final result was similar to a tapestry, with a pattern made from letters and numbers.

This poster is a call to action regarding sociopolitical engagement. The message is both strong and optimistic—amplified through the pairing of motivational language and visual aspects of letterform shape and color.
