Donald Judd

This publication was designed for an exhibition by American artist Donald Judd (1928–1994), the first solo exhibition of his work in three dimensions in France in eighteen years. Atelier Dyakova worked closely with Flavin Judd to create an experimental and unique object. The slanted book edge resonates with the geometry of prints by Judd that were featured in the show.

In the Making

The limited-edition book In the Making, commissioned by De Sousa Hughes, celebrates the makers who have grown with them for twenty years and offers incredible insight into their creative process, dedication, and craftsmanship. The book features tactile papers, embossing, and original illustrations bound together into an object intended to inspire readers to slow down, breathe, and immerse themselves in the beauty of craft. We commissioned Zürich-based illustrator Paula Troxler to create original and witty illustrations for the “Seeds of Wisdom,” a special section that features quotes from the makers. The source for the cover is Tanzender Stern (Dancing Star), 2000, a signature nail-embossed print by German sculptor and installation artist Günther Uecker.

Elliott Green

Inspired by the title of Elliott Green’s solo show at Pierogi Gallery, Under the Map Room, the book’s size and French folded pages reflect the concept of maps and connect with Green’s process and flow. The French fold creates natural crops, offering a dynamic and textural aperture of Green’s work, which has been recognized over the years by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Rome Prize of the American Academy in Rome.

Intelligence for Dummies

Ze Books, a hardcover trade book series founded by Michael Zilkha, celebrates the cultural impact of seminal artists and writers of the past fifty years. Thus far, the series includes semiautobiographical unpublished writings of Glenn O’Brien and Nick Flynn. Inspired by Zilkha’s seminal music label, Ze Records, as well as Ze Books’ position as a literature mix tape, the design of each volume switches between multiple paragraph layouts to constantly stimulate the reader.

Moholy-Nagy and the New Typography

The extensive publication documents a three-year research project on the National Bauhaus Year. It brings together the exhibition panels by the Bauhaus master László Moholy-Nagy, recently rediscovered in the Berlin Art Library, which are illuminated with characteristic keywords by renowned authors by means of an “Abcdarium”—from A for Akzidentien to Z for Zeitungsdesign. Through associative cross-reading, the typographic cosmos of ideas of the avant-garde of the 1920s can be experienced again.
